I was thinking about his instinctive choice of the 'genie' metaphor to describe our relationship. A magical, mythical creature, not human, and not angel; which the Master possesses, but in some sense, does not possess; his possession will only ever be short-lived, and isn't there too some sense that the Master is being used, or duped, by the genie? I'm not terribly well-versed in middle Eastern mythology, but don't all the wishes somehow come to nothing? Or the genie might sometimes be a wise and kindly spirit, who regards the foolish master he serves with rueful irony, despairing of his foolish choices of all the wrong wishes, but compelled to grant them just the same? Or else the genie secretly despises and resents the Master, this creature who he knows is greatly inferior to him, but to whom he is nevertheless enslaved? But they belong to different spheres, Master and genie, and the genie doesn't really exist at all in the Master's world, but is a kind of shadow in it from another world, during the time they are together...
